Old Westminsters - League (A)
Whoever thought a 10.15am kick-off was a good idea needs their head examined, especially when it's on the Isle of Dogs, but once again Frankie pulled a few rabbits out of the hat and 14 LOBs were ready for inspection on time to face the team currently lying second in the league, and who scored nine unanswered goals against us earlier in the season! Once the ref had been persuaded to change his black top, the oppo play in black, the game commenced.
It was always going to be tough, and so it proved as we found ourselves two down after the first quarter, one a bit messy, the other well taken. The record 'crowd' of six would have taken 2-0 at half-time but unfortunately the Westminsters doubled their advantage before the break, nothing flash just neat football.
With calls of "playing for pride" etc. ringing round the half-time talk we set about the second half. And what a transformation, a combination of Westminster taking their foot off the pedal and our increasing confidence made for a superb 45 minutes of football by the LOBs. All of a sudden the passing was slicker and to feet, close control better, and the way we moved the ball down the right was brilliant, constantly getting in behind the Westminster defence. Definitely the best football I've seen since becoming reinvolved, and just goes to show what we are capable of on our day.
It was no more than we deserved when after some sustained pressure Will H bundled the ball over the line from close range. Not exactly game on, but we showed them what we were made of and ended the game having arguably bossed the 2nd half, although the Westminsters were obviously never in any danger. We drew the second half 1-1 as the oppo had the last laugh, but we were really good value for it.
Once again you couldn't fault anyone for their effort and resilience, it's just a shame we can't get a consistent core of players out week after week, and with absolute respect to everyone on the pitch we're just shy of a bit of je ne sais quoi at either end of the pitch.
Everyone played bloody well but special mention goes to the woodwork which was my 'player' of the match, and to Eilian for having the balls to turn up with that haircut, fair play mate.
So we have a few weeks off before hopefully puting three sides out against the College, then the last push with two remaining league matches, both at home, against the Chums and OMTs, dates tbc #UTLOBs
