Old Salopians Vets - Derrick Moore Veterans Cup (H)
A number of frantic phone calls were necessary to get nine good men and true on to the park to face the Salopians, but what a nine! The plan was to leave Frankie T up front as the target man and give the Salopians the space out wide to see if they could do anything with it. Amazingly after 25 minutes the match was scoreless, and to be honest Mike J in goal hadn't been troubled. It was at this point that Jamie B managed to fall down a rabbit hole and turn his ankle, and then we were eight! With just five minutes to go to survive until half-time the oppo scored a scrappy goal which was added to a couple of minutes later when a looping header dropped inside the far post 0-2, but what an effort.
Sadly it wasn't to be a game of two halves, the second proving to be very similar to the first. The LOBs held on for about twenty minutes before a couple of shots found the back of the net, and a late fifth was a little undeserved after a great 'defensive effort' by all involved.
There's obviously a great deal of passion within the group and with a 'number' of LOBs fast approaching the magical 35 Vets age threshold things are looking good for the future.
Given it took the Rovers about ten years to get back into the Cricketer Cup having been expelled for failing to get a team out, it was vital we honoured this fixture to ensure the league know we're serious, so a huge well done and thanks to all involved.
